Instagram has officially confirmed it is testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels, a move that will allow users to watch videos in a floating window while performing other tasks on their devices. This long-awaited feature aims to enhance user convenience and boost video engagement across the platform.
The functionality will be familiar to anyone who has used YouTube or other video services. When a Reel is playing, a user can switch to another app, and the video will continue in a small, resizable overlay. A limited number of users have already been invited to test the feature and are seeing pop-ups explaining how to activate and use it.
The primary benefit for users is the freedom to multitask without interruption. For creators, the implications are even more significant, as PiP is expected to reduce video abandonment and increase overall watch time, especially for content that is several minutes long. For those who prefer not to use it, disabling the feature will be simple via the Reel’s three-dot menu.
