Uber Technologies has announced a significant expansion in the global food delivery market by acquiring the Germany-based company Delivery Hero for a staggering $14.8 billion. This strategic move will enhance Uber’s reach across 50 international markets, marking a pivotal development in its growth trajectory.

The terms of the agreement stipulate that Uber will purchase Delivery Hero’s core global business at a price of €41.50, approximately $47.60, per share. Additionally, the deal involves acquiring shares from major investor Prosus, further solidifying Uber’s stake in the global food delivery landscape.

In a concurrent transaction, investment firm SSW Partners will take over operations in 14 markets for an estimated $1.6 billion. This segment of the deal includes assets in countries such as Austria, Norway, Spain, and Sweden, with plans for SSW to divest these businesses separately. This move aligns with current trends in the food delivery sector, which has seen a surge in mergers and acquisitions following the rapid expansion during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The acquisition reflects Uber’s broader strategy of pursuing overseas expansion in recent years, a path also taken by its competitors. Meanwhile, Delivery Hero initiated a strategic review after facing investor pressure to restructure and consider asset sales. This acquisition by Uber is poised to significantly bolster its presence and competitive edge in the global food-delivery industry.

As consolidation continues to shape the food delivery sector, Uber’s latest acquisition underscores the ongoing efforts by major companies to solidify their international positions. With this deal, Uber is set to make substantial strides in enhancing its footprint and influence across the global market.
