He died of natural causes in a retirement community dedicated to entertainment professionals located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. Rydell’s career as a director reached a pinnacle with “On Golden Pond” in 1981, where he orchestrated the performances of iconic actors Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The film was a critical success, earning 10 Academy Award nominations, with Henry Fonda and Hepburn both winning acting Oscars. Although Rydell was nominated for Best Director, the award went to Warren Beatty for “Reds.”
