The South Korean government is set to launch a Future Response Fund, channeling additional tax revenue from the flourishing semiconductor industry into long-term investments across sectors such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, and aerospace. This ambitious initiative is designed to enhance South Korea’s competitive edge in the era of AI, while simultaneously driving economic growth over the forthcoming decades. Apart from these strategic sectors, the fund will also support housing, startup development, and employment opportunities aimed at benefiting the youth.
Recently, officials introduced a public-private investment strategy centered on three key projects focused on semiconductors, AI data centers, and physical AI technologies. These projects are envisioned to act as new growth engines, addressing economic inequality and expanding opportunities nationwide. The government is also set on fostering the biotechnology and aerospace industries beyond the Seoul metropolitan area by forging stronger collaborations with local governments and businesses.
Prime Minister Han Seong-sook emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, the ruling party, and the private sector to ensure these projects’ successful rollout. She highlighted South Korea’s robust experience in industrialization and digital transformation as a solid foundation for becoming a leader in artificial intelligence globally. In addition to this, government leaders have called on lawmakers to expedite the approval of vital economic reforms and livelihood-related legislation, stressing that timely legal backing is crucial for translating policy objectives into real-world outcomes.
Despite the optimistic outlook, the investment plan has faced criticism from opposition parties, who claim that the allocation of funds is politically motivated, disproportionately favoring regions traditionally supporting the ruling party. However, the government insists that these projects are purely intended to boost national competitiveness and ensure sustainable, long-term economic growth.
