In a significant display of support for Ukraine, European leaders have convened in Kyiv to address the urgent need for enhanced air-defense systems amidst escalating Russian missile assaults. This gathering, known as the Coalition of the Willing, is spearheaded by the UK, France, and Germany, with participation from several other European leaders joining virtually. EU Council President Antonio Costa is also part of the discussions.
The talks come in response to an increase in Russian missile strikes targeting Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. Ukraine has been vocal in its appeal for more air-defense systems and interceptor missiles from its allies to safeguard its citizens. This urgent request has prompted a coordinated effort among European nations to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
Britain is anticipated to declare further support for Ukraine, while France is poised to initiate local production of the long-range SCALP missile. In addition, France has committed to supplying more interceptor missiles, a move aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses against Russian aggression. These developments underscore the strategic importance of supporting Ukraine with advanced military technology.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has raised concerns over the declining supply of Patriot interceptor missiles. Ukraine received 675 of these missiles in 2023, but the numbers have dropped to 364 in 2025, with a projected delivery of only 264 in 2026. With the winter season approaching, Kyiv is advocating for at least 300 interceptors to effectively counter Russian missile threats.
Ukraine’s reliance on sophisticated Western air-defense systems is critical, given the challenge of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. Consequently, European allies are actively exploring avenues to increase missile supplies while simultaneously exerting diplomatic pressure on Moscow.
