In a strategic move to bolster its air defense capabilities, India is progressing with plans to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf systems from Russia. Moscow has put forth a cost proposal to New Delhi, setting the stage for negotiations. The ultimate decision on this acquisition will be made by India’s Cabinet Committee on Security once the pricing discussions conclude and the Finance Ministry gives its approval. This follows India’s 2018 agreement to purchase five S-400 systems for $5.43 billion, with the final delivery expected by November 2026.
The introduction of these additional S-400 systems is anticipated to significantly enhance India’s air defense, particularly in the eastern sector bordering China. The performance of the S-400 systems was notably demonstrated during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, which has reinforced India’s resolve to expand its fleet of these advanced air defense systems.
While India is keen on expanding its S-400 arsenal, it has yet to make a decision regarding the acquisition of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets. The Indian Air Force has shown interest in these fighters, especially in light of China deploying J-20 stealth aircraft in Tibet, but no definitive steps have been taken in that direction.
As discussions around the S-400 acquisition advance, they are expected to be a focal point in broader defense talks between India and Russia. This dialogue will likely be further intensified with the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit scheduled for September.
