During the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin declined a proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a direct meeting to advance peace efforts. Putin expressed that he currently sees “no point” in engaging in face-to-face discussions. Zelenskyy had suggested a meeting in a neutral location such as Switzerland or Turkey, aiming to initiate diplomatic negotiations starting from the existing frontlines and advocating for a full ceasefire during the talks.
Putin reiterated that Russia’s strategic goals in Ukraine remain steadfast. He highlighted that Russian forces have established control over the entire Luhansk region and a significant portion of the Donetsk region. Furthermore, Putin emphasized Moscow’s demand for Ukraine to cede control over the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions as part of any negotiations.
In light of Putin’s rejection, Zelenskyy accused the Kremlin of opting for continued military action rather than seeking a diplomatic resolution. He argued that Russia’s dismissal of the proposal reflects a disinterest in resolving the ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine has escalated its offensive operations against Russian military and energy infrastructure, employing drone strikes aimed at ports, cargo vessels, and fuel facilities. Russia has acknowledged these attacks and announced plans to bolster its air defense systems in response.
Aside from the military and diplomatic developments, Putin also addressed concerns regarding Russia’s economic stability amidst the war and international sanctions. He defended the resilience of the Russian economy, asserting that despite the economic challenges and financial restrictions imposed by Western nations, the country continues to withstand the pressures effectively.
