Lavrov accused Washington of exerting increased pressure on Moscow through sanctions instead of acting as an impartial negotiator. This accusation follows a recent decision by G7 leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, to intensify measures targeting Russia’s economy, with a particular focus on its energy sector.
Since Trump resumed office in 2025, he has aimed to mediate negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. However, these diplomatic efforts have reached an impasse, as Ukraine remains firm in its refusal to agree to Russian demands involving territorial concessions, military limitations, and reducing Western support. The stalemate persists despite international attempts to broker peace, leaving the future of negotiations uncertain.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed concerns over Europe’s increasing military expenditures and defense expansions. He claims that European nations are openly preparing for potential conflict with Russia through heightened military budgets and rearmament initiatives. Putin reiterated Russia’s stance that Ukraine should withdraw from the eastern Donbas region and announced that Russian forces are nearing the capture of the strategic city of Kostiantynivka.
Putin also accused Ukraine and its Western allies of supporting efforts to destabilize Russia by targeting its infrastructure. These allegations come as the conflict, initiated by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, continues to cause widespread devastation.
