The European Parliament has officially suspended the US trade deal ratification process, responding to President Trump’s threat of 10% tariffs unless Europe supports his Greenland acquisition plans. This decision represents the most substantial material action Brussels has taken against what European leaders characterized last week as blackmail.
Trade committee chairman Bernd Lange established clear terms for resuming negotiations, insisting that threats concerning Greenland must cease entirely before any compromise becomes possible. The frozen agreement would have provided American industrial exporters with zero-tariff access to European markets across multiple sectors.
Despite the trade deal suspension, the EU’s commitment to purchase $750 billion in American energy remains fully operational. According to Lange’s confirmation, this energy arrangement exists independently from the tariff negotiations, allowing Brussels to preserve energy cooperation while defending political autonomy.
The deteriorating diplomatic relationship became evident when Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, altered her schedule after addressing parliament. She cancelled a potential Davos meeting with Trump, returning immediately to Brussels to prepare for an emergency summit convening Thursday at 7pm.
The crisis summit agenda includes examination of powerful response mechanisms, notably the potential activation of an anti-coercion instrument never before deployed in practice. Originally designed to counter Chinese economic pressure on individual member states, this nuclear option could enable Brussels to restrict US businesses from accessing European markets. Additionally, leaders will discuss implementing €93 billion worth of counter-tariffs on American exports. Potential targets range from major technology companies and cryptocurrency platforms to aircraft manufacturers and agricultural exporters, though European officials acknowledge consumers might face higher costs or reduced access to American products and services.
