A Russian tanker, the Universal, carrying approximately 270,000 barrels of diesel fuel, has reportedly altered its course after failing to reach Cuba, its original destination. Initially departing from Russia in April, the tanker spent several weeks adrift in the Atlantic Ocean before rerouting towards Brazil. This change in direction was observed through maritime tracking data, which showed the vessel drifting in the Sargasso Sea, northeast of the Caribbean, before veering south.
The tanker’s destination was subsequently updated to “For order,” a maritime term indicating that the ship is awaiting new instructions or a definitive endpoint. The Universal is currently under sanctions from multiple entities, including the United States, the European Union, Britain, Switzerland, and Canada.
Departing from the Russian port of Vistino in early April, the tanker was escorted by Russian naval vessels during segments of its journey until it reached the Atlantic. Cuba, grappling with significant fuel shortages and frequent electricity blackouts, has been under increasing pressure regarding its fuel imports. This situation has been exacerbated by the limited number of Russian tankers authorized to deliver oil to the island, with only one reported delivery this year, which has already been depleted, further straining Cuba’s energy resources.
The United States continues to intensify its economic measures against Cuba, advocating for political and economic reforms within the country. In addition, tensions between Washington and Havana have heightened following US legal proceedings against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro. The legal action pertains to the 1996 incident involving the shootdown of aircraft operated by the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue.
Amid these developments, the US has recently deployed the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and its accompanying strike group to the region, signaling an increased military presence nearby. This move comes at a time when the geopolitical landscape remains tense, with implications for fuel supplies and broader regional stability.
