South Korea has solidified its position as a major player in the global economy by achieving the world’s second-largest current account surplus in the second quarter of the year, according to President Lee Jae Myung. The surplus reached US$116.63 billion from April to June, trailing only behind China, which recorded a surplus of US$193.72 billion, as reported by the International Monetary Fund through the Bank of Korea.

President Lee highlighted this accomplishment as evidence of South Korea’s evolving role in the global economic landscape. Moving beyond its traditional image of following advanced economies, South Korea is now significantly contributing to the global economic direction. Notably, the country’s surplus surpassed the combined figures of Germany and Japan, marking a significant milestone in its economic journey.

A key factor in this economic success is the international performance of South Korean companies, particularly in the semiconductor sector. This industry is pivotal to the advancement of artificial intelligence technologies, an area where South Korea is making substantial contributions.

President Lee emphasized the importance of building on these achievements by enhancing industrial competitiveness and raising the country’s potential economic growth rate. He called for strategic measures to maintain and expand this economic momentum, ensuring that South Korea continues to thrive on the world stage.
