Renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, who brought life to iconic characters such as Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, passed away at the age of 85. Cullen died at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, surrounded by his family, as confirmed in a statement from his relatives.
Cullen, originally from Montreal, launched his career in Canadian television and radio before becoming a legendary figure in voice acting. His journey with Optimus Prime began in 1984 with the Transformers animated television series. He continued to voice the revered Autobot leader in seven Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, alongside various spin-offs. Cullen’s portrayal of Eeyore, the beloved and ever-somber donkey from Winnie the Pooh, also left a lasting impression as he provided the voice for numerous TV shows, films, and video games.
His talent extended beyond these roles, as Cullen voiced KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT in Knight Rider, and contributed the distinctive sound effects of the creature in the 1987 movie Predator. Additionally, he took on the voice role of King Kong in the 1976 remake of the classic film.
Cullen’s interpretation of Optimus Prime was heavily influenced by his older brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, who advised him to depict the character as a true hero, strong yet not aggressive. This approach helped shape the character’s enduring appeal. Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011, and in 2023, he was recognized with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards.
