Zelenskyy Criticizes US Pause on Russia Sanctions, Warns of Prolonged Conflict

by admin477351

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed strong criticism of the US decision to pause the implementation of new sanctions against Russia, cautioning that this move might embolden Russian aggression in Ukraine. Zelenskyy argued that halting sanctions could be seen as a concession, potentially prolonging the conflict.

The suspension, a decision attributed to US President Donald Trump’s administration, involves a 60-day pause to evaluate the sanctions’ potential economic repercussions. This decision, while welcomed by Russian officials, has sparked concern in Ukraine over the United States’ commitment to maintaining pressure on Moscow.

The proposed sanctions aimed to impose additional restrictions on Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation network. Notably, they included provisions for tariffs as high as 100% on major importers of Russian oil, such as China and India.

Zelenskyy’s remarks come amid heightened Russian military activities, specifically targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as winter approaches. Recent Russian strikes have reportedly damaged over 15 key electricity generation and transmission facilities, raising alarms about power shortages and the continuity of essential services in Ukrainian cities.

The Ukrainian president highlighted the increased strain on the country’s air defense systems, faced with the challenge of intercepting a growing number of missiles and drones. He called for sustained international support to safeguard critical infrastructure and protect civilians.

Additionally, Zelenskyy voiced concerns about restrictions on Starlink satellite internet services, which have impacted Ukrainian military operations, including drone activities.

The situation underscores escalating tensions between Washington and Kyiv concerning strategies to end the war, with Zelenskyy insisting that sustained sanctions on Russia are crucial for achieving a lasting peace. He warned that easing restrictions while Russia continues its offensive could exacerbate the conflict.
